Gardening at Thornhill

Our outdoor garden spaces provide an excellent environment for Thornhill students to enjoy hands-on learning of biology and ecology, and to gain understanding of our food sources and how to nurture, respect, and enjoy them.

Our garden spaces include raised beds for growing and harvesting fruit, vegetables and herbs throughout the year, fruit-bearing trees and vines, a native plant habitat, a woodland garden, composting bins, and a rainwater catchment system.

Garden instruction is integrated with our science program and is part of our sustainability efforts to make our school more environmentally and ecologically conscious, greener, and more beautiful.

In the garden, Thornhill students:
  • Plant, care for, harvest, and eat a variety of fruits and vegetables
  • Build healthy soil through composting and planting of cover crops
  • Harvest seeds and store for the next cycle of planting
  • Study water, soil, and root systems as well as the diverse population of insects, invertebrates and animals who inhabit the garden areas
  • Develop a deeper connection to plant and animal life cycles and the processes that support life on our planet
  • Gain a greater awareness and appreciation of food and nutrition

Through regular harvesting and sampling of edible fruits, vegetables, and herbs grown in our garden areas students gain a deep connection with the food they are eating and learn to love the fresh food that comes directly from the earth. Being an integral part of the garden’s growth and life cycles instills a sense of environmental stewardship in our students and gives them the rewards of working in community to create something wonderful.
